We War Not Book II-Chap 11
“They Moved as One”
...Observing the battle zone map, Zane saw that he was quickly becoming surrounded. The situation had just turned terrible for Zane as the seven troopers and one brilliant Alpha Max slowly tightened the noose around his precarious position. If he ever needed that edge, then now was the time. “How would he get out of this one ?”
Suddenly, Zane noticed that a yellow flashing icon, representing one of the original three Troopers, had gone out. Before he could inquire about the reason from Razer, he heard an all-too-familiar voice come over his secure line. “You welcome.” It was Ragnas! How had she learned of the mission tonight? Why was she even here and helping him? Before you get any big ideas about what this may mean for us, please be assured that I’m here only because our mutual friend, David Harkin, has asked me to do so. Without him being so persistent, I would have left you to deal with this mess on your own. As soon as this is put to rest, I’m gone, and you can drink another Cup of Pikrainó.” Zane was sure he had heard a snarl in her voice, and although it had been directed at him, he was glad there were others present who would soon feel the wrath of Ms. Ragnas, aka Battle Angel. For now, it was time to set aside their differences and dispatch their common enemy. It was time to dance.
It is a rare but beautiful thing when a man and a woman can come together to overcome a difficult task and do so while working in total unspoken harmony. Despite the current disagreement between Ragnas and Zane, they were individually mighty warriors; however, when conjoined, they became a force to reckon with. Having taken out the first trooper, Ragnas had a direct line of access to meet up with Zane so they could provide both offensive and defensive support for each other. She also knew it would take both of their powers to overcome the Alpha Max. Using the overhead steel walkways, Ragnas quickly joined Zane on his perch inside the control room of the overhead gantry cranes. Suddenly, uncloaking directly behind Zane, she got his attention with an oh-so-subtle laugh. Turning to see her standing less than ten feet away caused Zane to lose all sense of control. She was beautiful, clad in her shimmering body-tight armor. She was both deadly and stunning at the same time.
Locking eyes on each other, there was a moment when Zane was sure there was no wall between them, if only for a brief rhythmic beat of their hearts. Before he could speak, the crane operating cab came under blistering fire, and both he and Ragnas hit the floor. They needed a plan on how to engage their attackers, so, lying on the floor next to her, he began a quick discussion on forming such a plan. Before he could formulate any words, she looked him directly in the eyes and said. “Dance with me.“
With those three words, she rose to her feet. Zane didn’t know what she meant, and even Razer was silent on any interpretation, but as Ragnas moved to confront the nearest attacker, Zane instinctively moved alongside her. Having drawn his sword, she drew her bow. Without so much as a word or sideways glance, they began to move in tandem as if telepathically connected. With each step, the other countered in such a way as to either provide cover or enhance their offensive approach to the target. Zane had never experienced such harmony and fluidity of actions with another. He knew what Ragnas was going to do before she even made a move, just as she knew what he was going to do. It wasn’t as if his mind had to think; rather, he just knew and responded accordingly. Working in this way, they quickly and secretly came upon the second trooper from the first squad. Without hesitation, Zane stepped into the walkway directly in front of the trooper, fully exposing himself to its fire. As the trooper came up to deploy its weapon, it fully exposed itself from the rear. The explosive-tipped arrow left Ragnas’s bow with an almost undetectable twang but with expert aim. It struck the Robot squarely in the back between its shoulders, embedding itself four inches into its chest cavity. A small explosion occurred, and the robot broke in half, crashing to the ground. With nothing between them now, Zane and Ragnas just stared at each other when, all at once, they both broke into a broad smile and, as if on cue, spoke in unison.
“Let’s Dance !”
The remaining Robot Troopers stood no chance of engaging this warrior couple.
